Anthony Hopkins otrzymał nagrodę Akademii za rolę w „Milczeniu owiec” (Silence of the Lambs, 1991), a następnie był do tej nagrody nominowany za „Okruchy dnia” (The Remains of the Day, 1993), „Nixon” i "Amistad" (1995). W 1993 roku wystąpił ponadto w filmie Richarda Attenborough „Cienista dolina” (Shadowlands), otzrymując za tę rolę liczne nagrody krytyków w Stanach Zjednoczonych i Wielkiej Brytanii.

Urodzony w Margam w Walii, Anthony Hopkins był jedynakiem i ukończył Cowbridge Grammar School. W wieku 17 lat uczestniczył w amatorskim programie YMCA, gdzie wyspecjalizował się w grze na pianinie i otrzymał stypendium do Welsh College of Music & Drama w Cardiff.

Po dwóch latach nauki i dwuletniej służbie wojskowej, Hopkins rozpoczął w 1960 roku pracę w Manchester Library Theater na stanowisku asystenta kierownika sceny. Niedługo później otrzymał stypendium do London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, którą ukończył ze srebrnym medalem.

W 1965 roku, aktor został zaproszony na przesłuchania do sztuki reżyserowanej przez Laurence Olivera i dwa lata później wystąpił w „Dance of Death” tegoż reżysera. Na deskach teatralnych wystąpił jeszcze w następujących produkcjach: „Equus”, „Pravda” (nagroda British Theatre Association), „Anthony and Cleopatra”, „Król Lear”, „M. Butterfly”.

Anthony Hopkins zadebiutował w filmie w 1967 roku w „The Lion In Winter” z Katharine Hepburn i Peterem O’Toole. Inne filmy z jego udziałem to: „Howard’s End” , „Dracula” (Bram Stoker’s Dracula), „Wichry namiętności” (Legends of the Fall), „Droga do Wellville” (The Road to Wellville), „Picasso - twórca i niszczyciel” (Surviving Picasso), „Maska Zorro” (The Mask of Zorro) Martina Campbella, „Amistad” Stevena Spielberga, „Człowiek słoń” (The Elephant Man) Davida Lyncha, „O jeden most za daleko” (A Bridge Too Far) i wiele innych. W 1995 roku Hopkins zadebiutował jako reżyser filmową adaptacją sztuki Czechowa „Wujaszek Wania” - „August”, do którego napisał także muzykę.

31 grudnia 1992 roku królowa Elżbieta II nadała Anthony’emu Hopkinsowi tytuł szlachecki.

Najnowsze role Hopkinsa to postaci wykreowane w filmach "Titus", "Instynkt", epizodyczna rólka w filmie "Mission Impossible II", gdzie wcielił się w postać komandora Swanbecka. Na początku roku 2001 aktor zakończył prace na planie filmu "Hannibal", który jest kontynuacją "Milczenia owiec". W najbliższym czasie będziemy oglądać tego wybitnego aktora w filmach "Hearts in Atlantis", "The Devil and Daniel Webster" oraz prequelu "Milczenia owiec", obrazie pt. "Czerwony smok".
