Nowy Jork jest „świętym miejscem” dla ciężkiej muzyki. Tu kształtowała się muzyka metalowa i hardcore oraz światopogląd, jaki te rodzaje muzyki ze sobą niosą. W końcu nastąpiło połączenie tych stylistyk, co zaowocowało powstaniem takich zespołów jak Anthrax, Agnostic Front oraz wielu innych tuzów ze sceny NY. Teraz do tej grupy wiodących zespołów śmiało można dodać przedstawiciela drugiej fali NYHC - Sworn Enemy, którzy perfekcyjnie łączą intensywność metalu z brzmieniem i brutalnością muzyki hardcore.

Korzenie Sworn Enemy sięgają połowy lat dziewięćdziesiątych, kiedy to trzej starzy przyjaciele z Queens, Nowy Jork – wokalista Sal LoCoco i gitarzyści Mike Raffinello i Lorenzo Antonucci współtworzyli kapelę o nazwie Mindset. Zespół ten miał dobrą renomę na nowojorskiej scenie hardcore, potwierdzoną wydaniem przychylnie odebranej EP. Mimo to założyciele Mindset zdecydowali zmienić nieco oblicze zespołu. Grupa adoptowała nazwę Sworn Enemy i rozpoczęła podbój sceny. W ciągu półtora roku od powstania SE zagrał setki koncertów w całych Stanach, koncertując z wieloma uznanymi kapelami ze sceny hardcore/punk, począwszy od Poison The Well a skończywszy na Hatebreed. Ci ostatni, a szczególnie ich lider i wokalista Jamey Jasta bardzo pomógł zespołowi i odegrał znaczącą rolę w ich wypromowaniu. Po jednym ze wspólnie zagranych koncertów w Massachusetts, będący pod dużym wrażeniem seta Sworn Enemy, Jamey zaproponował wydanie świeżo zrealizowanego materiału kapeli w jego wytwórni Stillborn Records. EP pt. „Negative Outlook” podbił serca hardcore’owej braci i rozszedł się w imponującej liczbie 15000 kopii. W międzyczasie do kapeli doszli basista Mike Couls i pałker Timmy Mycek z legendarnego Cold As Life (Detroit). Niedługo później SE zrealizowało kolejną EP dla Stillborn pt. „Integrity Defines Strength”. W międzyczasie zespół ciągle koncertował ze wspomnianym już Hatebreed, God Forbid, Unearth, D.R.I., American Nightmare i z wieloma innymi zespołami.

Popularność zespołu rosła z każdym koncertem i na początku 2003 roku zespół podpisał kontrakt z wytwórnią Elektra i wydał swój debiut pt. „As Real As It Gets”. Dzięki tej płycie zespół mógł zagrać na sławnym Ozzfest 2003, a reszt czasu spędził na promocji swojego debiutu. Niestety zespół opuścił wytwórnię Elektra i w zespole nastąpiły zmiany, miejsce Mike Couls na basie zajął Ed Kilpatrick oraz do zespołu dołączył gitarzysta Jamin Hunt.

Zespół poświecił się ciężkiej pracy i podpisał kontrakt z Abacus Recordings co umożliwiło im wydanie swojej drugiej długo grającej płyty o nazwie „The Beginning Of The End”. Producentem tej płyty był Tim Lambesis (frontman As I Lay Dying) a za miksy odpowiadał sławny Zeus, znany ze współpracy z The Red Chord, Shadows Fall i Unearth. Płyta została nagrana w czerwcu 2005 r. w studiu Big Fish w San Diego. Dzięki tej płycie zespół udowodnił, że nie podąża za żadnymi trendami tylko gra muzykę prosto z serca.

Najnowsze dzieło amerykanów to “TOTAL WORLD DOMINATION”. Płyta ta już dziś została okrzyknięta przez niektórych jako jedna z lepszych pozycji w dyskografii tej kapeli.

New York is known as a sacred institution for heavy music. Shaped by ideals surrounding everyday life’s trials and tribulations with an honest desperation and urgency, metal and hardcore have been as much about attitude as about the music. Ushering in a new age of crossover, paved by acts such as Anthrax, Agnostic Front and other New York vets, you can now add Sworn Enemy to the list of bands forming a caustic hybridization of thrashy, intense metal with the thud, and grit of hardcore.

Formed in Queens, NY in late 1997, it didn’t take long for the music world to take notice of Sworn Enemy’s crushing sound and delivery. While the hardcore underground boiled with excitement over the band, Sworn Enemy recorded their debut EP, Negative Outlook, for Stillborn Records, the label of Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed), in 2001. With overwhelming positive reactions from fans and critics alike, the EP pushed Sworn Enemy to the frontlines of proud New York hardcore/metal acts. During this time, the band acquired the bass skills of Mike Couls of Detriot hardcore band Cold As Life, sharpening the band’s impact into the most hardworking and intense band around. With this incarnation of Sworn Enemy, they toured relentlessly with acts such as God Forbid, Hatebreed, Unearth, D.R.I., American Nightmare and many more.

As the band’s popularity grew, they signed to Elektra Records in early 2003 and released their debut full-length, As Real As It Gets; a lesson in brutal metal/hardcore crossover. The band earned a coveted spot on Ozzfest 2003, and continued to tour in support of the record. Parting ways with Elektra, but undeterred in their quest for delivering no frills, metallic hardcore, the band re-solidified their line-up with Ed Kilpatrick on bass to replace Mike Couls (who went on to join Agents Of Man) and Jamin Hunt on guitar. Now more dedicated than ever, the band have signed to Abacus Recordings and are prepared to drop their sophomore record, The Beginning Of The End, like a battering ram of violence.

Produced by Tim Lambesis (frontman for As I Lay Dying), engineered by Steve Russell and mixed by Zeus (The Red Chord, Shadows Fall), "The Beginning Of The End" pulverizes even the most calloused listener. Recorded at Big Fish studios in San Diego, CA, during June 2005, the new record takes the hostility and conviction of the band to a new level of destruction.

The band’s mission is simple, “To set the tone for the new age of metal,” says vocalist/frontman Sal Enemy. “This record signifies a new chapter for us as a band, a new style of music.” Revolving around topics of politics, religion and everyday life, the new album showcases the band in their element, delivering heavy-hitting music with themes anyone can relate to. Forget what you think you know about Sworn Enemy- they’re pushing their personal metallic assault way into the red without any care or regard to the current metalcore scene. “We don’t follow any trends. We do it from the heart.”

2007’s “Maniacal” marked an even more violent sonic barrage fueled by massive doses of classic thrash metal.

Now, SWORN ENEMY has returned with a scathing new assault that is unquestionably their most impressive and destructive release yet. This opus takes the group’s sound to new heights, which sees them embracing a thrashier edge and pummeling the listener with unrivaled aggression at times reminiscent of thrash titans like Exodus and Testament, as well as early Megadeth and Anthrax. “Total World Domination” (2009) was co-produced once again by As I Lay Dying vocalist Tim Lambesis and the renowned Daniel Castleman (Destroy The Runner, Winds Of Plague).

These maniacs recently wrapped up a very successful European trek and will embark on a massive North American headlining tour, Trendkilla 09, this spring. The run, which kicked off on May 1st also features For The Fallen Dreams, ABACABB, Suffokate and Thick As Blood in the supporting slots.
